KASTRO VILLAGE in SIFNOS ISLAND

Kastro (castle) and its little harbor “ Seralia” are among the oldest villages in the Cycladic islands. Kastro was the capital of Sifnos until the 19th century A.D..

It is one of the rare examples worldwide and one of the two in Greece, where the walls of each individual house, created the outside perimeter of the fortification of the castle. The houses where built one next to the other and all house entrances where facing inside the village.  The castle had only 5 main entrances called “Lotzia”, which you can still see today.

Because of its historic value Kastro is protected by the Greek Preservation Law and no building can be erected unless it adheres to strict architectural guidelines, which would preserve the original character of the village. In addition, all building materials have to be carried by mules, as no vehicle has access inside the village.
